A Great Trip

Our trip was wonderful! On Sunday, we rode the bus to Atlanta. After we checked into our hotel, we walked to the MARTA station. We rode MARTA to Peachtree Street. We had supper at the Hard Rock Cafe. On the way back to the hotel we got some great pictures of the Capitol. The next morning, we had breakfast at the Department of Education building and then we walked to the Capitol. When we arrived at the Capitol, we set up our booth. Many people stopped by to see our presentation. We showed them our movie, our blog, and how we use the Promeathean Board to learn math. Mrs. Martin, Mayor Margaret Evans, Senator Jack Hill, and Representative Jon Burns were some of the people that came to visit us. Representative Jon Burns took us on a tour of the Capitol. We got to go inside the Governor's office and chambers of the House of Representatives and take pictures. It was a great trip! We shared some of the great things that are happening in our school AND we got a first hand look at an important landmark in our great state!

A World of Websites

The internet offers an endless supply of websites that are great resources for math teachers. Here are a few more of our favorites. We use the flashcards at aplusmath.com for drill and practice. Rainforestmaths.com and aaamath.com are great places for students to practice a variety of math skills. Juliethompson.com is a favorite of SCES third grade teachers. Last but not least, our textbook publisher, Houghton Mifflin, has great resources for parents and kids.

Using the Georgia On-line Assessment System

As part of the eMath grant that SCES received, teachers are required to create and administer tests using the new Georgia On-line Assessment System. Each student has their own unique login which they use to take test on-line from home and school. The teachers use the pretest and posttest results to refine their mathematics instruction.

Cyberchase

Cyberchase is a favorite of most SCES students. Cyberchase Gamecentral has a great assortment of games that concentrate on a variety of math concepts . . . from patterns to measurement and all topics in between. Students love Cyberchase for its cool graphics and great sound effects. Teachers love Cyberchase because its games encourage higher level thinking skills. Some of our favorites are . . . Score the Pour, Pattern Quest, Railroad Repair, and Spaceship Builder.

A blog is a web log. Teachers at SCES use blogs to help students quickly access websites that are used in the classroom. Teachers also use their blogs to establish a connection with parents and keep them up to date with exciting things that are occuring in the classroom. As we become more and more comfortable with our technology, we hope that students will use the blogs to reflect upon thier learning. Most of the math teachers in third, fourth, and fifth grade have blogs. Here are just a few of them . . . National Library of Virtual Manipulatives

The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives is an interactive site that provides manipulatives for numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data and probability. This site shows students different multiplication strategies, like lattice multiplication. It also shows students how to relate multiplication to the area of a rectangle. Other activities on the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives include interactive geoboards and clocks that allow help students to solve problems related to elasped time.

Illuminations

The tools at Illuminations are a resources that teachers at SCES use in their classrooms a lot. Mrs. Wood's, third grade class, used the geometric solids at Illuminations as part of their birdhouse unit. Illuminations also has an isometric drawing tool that allows students to draw 3-D shapes and visualize volume. The adjustable spinner can help students gain a better understanding of probability. The mirror tool allows students to create pictures and determine if their picture is symmetrical. The equivalent fractions tool helps students determine if fractions are equal. Illuminations is a partnership between the National Council of Teacher's of Mathematics and Marco Polo.

Brain Pop!

We use BrainPop to help us learn math, science, and social studies. BrainPop is a website that shows short movies about a topic and then has a quiz to review what was shown in the movie. Here are some movies on the types of triangles, polygons, and mean, median, and mode.
